Damodharkunda pilgrimage tour description:
Damodar Kunda (Lake), situated in the Upper Mustang area of Nepal, is well-known for being a Hindu pilgrimage destination, but to Hindu devotees, it is a life-fulfilling dream. Come rain or shine, they venture out on a long, arduous journey in hopes of reaching there to take a holy bath at least once in their lifetime into this divine lake before passing away into the next life. Human beings are believed to experience sacramental divinity and attain atonement from all their sins after dipping into this holy lake. In the vicinity of this lake lie two other kundas-Sweta kunda and Rakta kunda. An interesting mythical story is associated with it where Lord Bishnu said that the one who visits Damodar Kunda and takes a holy bath would be free from all sin. According to Puran (Holy book for Hindus) two sons of Kuber were suffering from their wrongdoing and much sin was committed in their previous lives. There were absolved immediately from their sins after taking a bath instructed from Lord Bishnu. At the altitude of 4,890 meters towards the north of Annapurna Range, Damodar Kunda can be quite cold and windy. Usually tourists may visit Damodar Kunda between April to September every year, but the best time to visit here is during August because a huge annual full-moon festival takes place here where thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims flock to celebrate the full-moon. The Tibetan plateau & Damodar Mountain to the north and the Annapurna Himalayan range to the south can be seen clearly from this view point. To reach Damodar Kunda, it takes a three day walk from the northeast of the main Mustang trekking trail & is very close to the Tibetan border, which lies in the restricted upper Mustang area. This mystical place is also noted for its abundant holy idols of shaligram and a large meadow of kusha around, which makes this place quite captivating for sightseers.
