 For the devout, Lumbini is a holy place of pilgrimage. For the curious, Lumbini is a cultural and historical site of archeological importance. Lumbini has been known throughout the centuries as the place where Prince Siddartha Gautama was born, in around 550 BC. Upon attaining nirvana, at Bodhgaya , India , he became the Buddha, or the enlightened one. The quiet peaceful atmosphere of Lumbini makes it well worth a visit, while the nearby ruins of the ancient city of Kapilavastu at Tilaurakot bring evocative images of the Buddha's early years of opulent splendour before he realised that suffering is synonymous with existence and sought a path to end all suffering. There are several monasteries at Lumbini and pilgrims come from all over the world to meditate and make offerings.
