Thorong Pass - Annapurna Circuit - Around Annapurna Trekking in Nepal

The Annapurna Circuit trek is a dramatic trek around the mighty Annapurna range, a journey that is regarded as one of the top ten walks in the world. The 222 km Annapurna Circuit trek, of the Annapurna massif offers a unique insight into the physical and cultural diversity of Nepal. This Tea house (lodged) or Camping Tents Camp based trek is certainly a 'classic' and is enjoyed by trekkers from all round the world.

Travel to Annapurna Circuit has to be conducted by drive to the road-head at Besishahar and then start the Annapurna Circuit trekking. The trek follows the Marsyangdi River through rice paddies, terraced fields and Hindu villages under the shadow of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. As we ascend, the valley becomes narrower, waterfalls plummet from high above, and the scenery gains a rugged alpine appearance. The trail soon bears west behind the Annapurnas, to enter a Trans-Himalayan region populated by people of Tibetan origin, whose prayer flags, mani walls and monasteries are constant reminders of their Buddhist culture. From Manang we undertake the challenging crossing of the Thorong La (5416m) this is the heart of the Annapurna Circuit trek and links the Marsyangdi and Kali Gandaki Valleys. At the top of the pass we majestic mountain views and then descend to the holy temples at Muktinath, before dropping to the valley floor at Jomsom. We then pass over the world's deepest gorge cutting between the peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri and on to the hot springs at sub-tropical Tatopani. The final climb of the trek takes us to Ghorepani, where we enjoy more magnificent views of the Annapurnas. The Annapurna Circuit then descends to the road head, where our transport awaits to take us to the beautiful Pokhara to complete this memorable trek and drive Tourist bus / Car or Flight to Kathmandu.

In August 2010 I have trekked with my son and a friend the Annapurna Circuit from Basisahar to Beni. We had a guide, Krishna Gurung., from Gokyo Treks & Expedition Co. He was everything one might want to wish in a guide. He was kind, informative and helpful. He smoothed out our travels, arranged tea houses, meals and most of all, he opened for us lots of otherwise inaccessible places: we visited Nepalese families, we talked to Lamas in remote monasteries about the Buddhism and Hindu religions, we saw Brahmins and discussed with them their religion, we visited a Tibetan health center and religious schools in remote areas on the trek. We even got the Nepalese 101 course for free. All these out of the ordinary experiences would not be accessible to an ordinary tourist without a guide. And finally, our guide kept us safe throughout the whole trek. I unconditionally recommend Gokyo Treks Co.  for anyone seeking a safe and fascinating trip through Nepal. Trekking in Monsoons season had an additional plus: there were almost no tourists on the trail and no rain except for the last few days as we neared Pokhara. In most cases we had a trek and tea houses for ourselves.

As well, just around the time I was planning to go to Nepal several governments issued warning against traveling to this country. From my experience these warnings, while certainly made in good faith, trying to keep citizens out of trouble and reflecting the political situation on a large scale, did not reflect what we have seen while being there. My personal experience was that Nepal is safe and people are friendly. Though, of course, accidents may happen everywhere, and traveling on top of a local bus without the rail guard is like a roller coaster ride (I did not do it !!!)..
