Adventure Rupina Pass + Larke Pass Trekking in Manaslu region !!

Manaslu Rupina la Pass trek has been opened in 1991 officially by the government of Nepal, but mountaineering expeditions have had long access to the area. Having become known as “Japanese Mountain” much of the information about the area was available in Japanese. The Japanese continued to dominate the climbing scene of Manaslu until 1971. A few trekkers including peripatetic Hugh Swift Managed to obtain the trekking permit for the region but otherwise this trek always has been the domain of the mountaineering expedition.

Manaslu Rupina la pass trekking is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating circumnavigating Manaslu peak 29 (7871m) Himal Chuli (7893m) and Boudha (6672m). Mostly Manaslu Rupina la pass trekking trails cover with Tibetan culture. Manaslu Rupina la pass trekking offer superb view of Himalayan panorama, Lush valleys, beautiful landscape, wild animals and birds. We cross the Rupina-La (4520m) and descend to the Marshyangdi river and further trek down to Besisahar from where we will drive back to Kathmandu . Since Manaslu Rupina la pass trekking trail has been found in 2005 by the depth research of Gokyo Treks & Expedition P. Ltd. Since then we are organizing this trip as a regular basis.

Day 14: Nyak to Lho 3180m. Today is a wonderful trekking day; soon after leaving Ghap, we ascend for an hour through a dense, cool forest, crossing the Bhudi Gandaki River once on a wooden bridge, climb on smooth, stone steps and eventually arrive at Namrung, at 2540 m at the Tibetan-run lodge. As we gain altitude, we reach alpine territory and are treated to increasingly broad mountain views. Namrung village is the start of Nubri, the region of purely Tibetan inhabitants speaking a dialect of western Tibet. A few hours later, we reach the village of Lihi at 2840 m, a substantial altitude gain. Lihi houses an old Gompa, and is spread along the trail with its billowing fields of barley, guarded by 'bear watches'. We are climb gently now; soon we cross a large stream flowing down from the Lidanda Glaciers and reach the picturesque Tibetan village of Sho at 3000m, where we stop for lunch. After an hour we reach at Lho, where we are treated to breath-taking views of Manaslu itself. We set up camp in Lho, Sunset and sunrise from the campsite are wonderful, and the small Gompa.

Day 15: Lhogaon – Samagaon (3360 m), 4hrs
Walking through the upper reaches of Lho, with the snowy peaks of Manaslu ahead of us in the distance, we pass the new Gompa and then ascend through light forests next to a small river to reach the Tibetan settlement of Shyla, where the villagers are often out in the fields. Another few hours of trekking through classic alpine scenery leads us past Tibet grazing settlements, the train to Pung Gyan Gompa, and then Sama Gaon, or Ro, as the locals call it. Sama Gaon sits in a bowl at the foot of the pastures leading to the high peaks, with Mani walls, a small Gompa and tightly packed rows of houses at the lower reaches of village, and the large Gompa at the upper reaches. The people settled here from Tibet over 500 years ago, and the two gompas date from this time, both having unique architecture and built of wood. The Tibetan villages here have entrance gates which are very distinctive from the Tibetan ones, and they maintain an active trade with their co-religionists in Tibet (notice the Chinese brandy and beer on sale). If the weather is good, you will see the village women weaving wool (baal) from Tibet into gowns - which are then traded back to Tibet. Taxes were actually paid to the Dzongka Dzong (fortress) at the border of Tibet, a few days walk from Sama Gaon, as late as the 1940's until it was taken over by the Gorkhas in the late 19th century. Later, after 1959, the region was home to Tibetan guerillas, and thus closed to trekking until 1992.

Day 16: Samagaon – Samdo (3780 m), 3 hrs
Another day of incredible mountain views during the walk up to Samdo, an easy three hours away. En route we pas the long Mani walls at Kermo Kharka, after which we spot the entrance chorten of Samdo high on a bluff. We descend back to the Bhudi Gandaki and cross a small bridge before another short climb to the 'Kane' entrance of Samdo; look back down valley for great views. The villagers of Samdo came across the border from the village of Riu after 1959 and built their new village here, at their old herding settlement (see below). Samdo village is a collection of houses and lodges at 3850 m, and most trekkers miss the heat of a week ago as we huddle around the stove and a wind from Tibet batters the windowpanes. Get out and take a walk around the village, where the inhabitants live an essentially Tibetan lifestyle, herding their yaks, sheep and goats, training their horses and planting barley. There is a small home Gompa in a house mid-village which we visited during our last village, a Puja being held by several of the reincarnated lamas living in the Samdo; Overnight at Tented Camp.

Day 17: Samdo – Dharamshala (4390 m), 4hrs
The once large Bhudi Gandaki is now merely a stream as we continue to follow its course ever upwards. Everywhere you look are mountains, as spectacular as they get and Manaslu is particularly impressive. After crossing to the East bank of the river, we reach the last permanent settlement in the valley which is called Sumdu. Above the village we cross the stream which runs down the Gya La (pass), the pass to Tibet, and there are the ruins of another village here known as Larkya Bazaa. Presumably this village thrived on trade with Tibet over the nearby Gya La, a trade which is now much diminished. Nearing the Larkya Glacier, we reach a lodge at 4450m which has been built to serve the travelers crossing the Larkya La.

Day 18: Dharamshala – Larkya pass (5130m) – Bhimthang (3660 m), 9hrs
After a short climb above the lodge, we reach the ablation valley on the North side of the Larkya Glaciers. There are views of Cho Danda and then of Larkya Peak. Finally, we walk across the moraines of the glacier, making a gradual ascent which becomes steeper only in the last section to the pass. From the pass, there are outstanding views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kanguru and the huge Annapurna II. Initially, there is a steep descent over snow and then screed, to reach the ablation valley trail to Larkya Kharka. A further hour on a moraine ridge path leads to Tanbuche 3900m in pleasant forest. (Note that the Larkya La is normally quoted at 5115m or so, I have it from a surveyor that the correct altitude is more like 5130m)

Day 19: Bhimtang to Dharapani 1860m.
A chilly but beautiful morning, as the sun hits the peaks around us long before the campsite. After leaving the grazing fields of Bhimtang, we cross a boulder-strewn river and head down through open forests of brilliantly blooming rhododendron, past the Kharka below Bhimtang. We'll lunch at a small tea-house, and then continue along the rocky river-bed and sliding hill-sides to several small, green villages, a sign that we've reached lower altitudes. Eventually, after a somewhat long but very scenic day, we reach the large village of Tilje village which are a mix of Manangis (of Tibetan descent) and Chhetris (Hindus), so have a unique architecture and culture, and eat mix foods - Dal Bhat, buckwheat dhiro, tsampa and Tibetan salt-tea. Overnight in Dharapani.

Day 20:  Trek from Dharapani to Jagat (1300m), 6 hrs
You trek all the way over a descended path along the bank of Dudh Khola (river) and Marshyangdi River. On the way, you walk through pleasant villages such as Taal which is an attractive village with a pretty waterfall and you can enjoy the sight of lush green hills. Eventually, you come across Jagat which is a stone village situated on a shelf, that juts into the precipitous Marshyangdi valley.

Day 21: Trek from Jagat to Bhulbhule (860m), 5 hrs
A steep trail descends from Jagat through Marshyangdi valley. You cross Marshyangdi River at Syange and walk through Ghermu Path (Ghermu field). This part of the trek is pleasant through a flat leveled path with views of green valleys and villages at some distance. Past this Ghermu field and a village, your trail goes uphill for nearly half an hour to reach Bahundanda. This village is mainly populated by Brahmins, Chhetris and few other ethnic communities. At this point, you descend all the way to Nagdi and you walk for an hour and half flat lever of path to reach Bhulbhule.

Day 22: Drive from Besisahar (820 m) to Kathmandu (1348 m), 6 hrs
It is a picturesque drive on the way back to Kathmandu along the banks of the Marshyangdi and Trishuli rivers with splendid views of green hills, mountains, farming terraces and colorful villages on both sides of road.

Manaslu (8163m)  Trekking in Nepal !!

It took us a long time to choose where to trek in Nepal.
I was there 26 years ago making the circle around the Annapurna. This was my first trecking ever. And a really good one. Many followed, mainly in the Alps but also in many regions in the world. But the Annapurna Circle was by far the best- even I got the altitude sickness those days. Than I had no idea what it was.
My wife Isabel is mad about mountains. I think she was born with a pair of skis on her feet.
Above 2000m you can`t get the grin out of her face. I call it grinsick. So I thought let us go trecking in Nepal and I have three weeks a happy wife. Unfortunately the Annapurna Trail is a highway now, with hundreds of people on it every day, luxury hotels and restaurants and lots of sex and drugs and rock`n roll. We wanted something like my trip many years ago. In the end we decided to walk around the Manaslu with 8163m the eightth highest mountain in the world.
End of October is a good time with clear sky and no or little rain but already quite cold in the altitude. Through a Nepal- Forum I heard about a very good guide, experienced, studied and several languages speaking, honest and not too expensive.

I contacted Ammar, asked him for a tour itinerary and was surprised about his price. It was much cheaper than in big groups of other tour operators. And that just for the two of us. We booked.
Kathmandu was a beautiful city..... 25years ago! Now loud, overcrowded and dirty.
We decided to stay the first two nights in Bhaktapur. An excellent decision. Traffic free center, beautiful buildings an Unesco World Heritage. The third day we left for Gorkha and started the trek. It was a real expedition. As we intended to go over the Rupina La Pass we needed a lot of stuff, food, tents, mattresses etc. We had many porters. First time Nepal traveler often is ashamed to book porters. You should not! Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Farmers have hardly any chance to get cash for clothes and school books. Often it is their only chance and even with 20kg they are much faster than you with 5kg. Treat them fair and both sides are happy.
We had three maps. There were three different ways in them to the Rupina La. None of them was correct. Ammar made this trip with his friend one month before to know where to go and how. We met two other groups. Their guides had no idea where to go and followed us. Many tour operators in Kathmandu have excellent websites and offer hundreds of different tours and promise you the sky. But be careful and choose a good and experienced one. In 3000m it started snowing. Ammar told us it is impossible or at least dangerous to go over the Rupina La 5100m). We decided to take an other alternative route, which is not that high. The other two groups went on. We heard later they had to go back after a bad time on the pass, and there was not enough time to make a good tour. They were very disappointed.

After two days we caught the regular way around the Manaslu (which is not over Rupina La). It was magnificent. Three weeks we did not hear any motor, radio or machine. We slept in our tents very comfortable. The crew were our children. They called us mum and dad. There was a lot of laughing and singing esp. in the evening on the camp fire.

The typical day starts in the darkness at 5:30. "Good morning Sir, tea please". We get it in the tent. 10 minutes later they bring warm water for a wash. Than the breakfast is ready. Porridge, eggs, fresh bread, jam, cheese, fruits tea and coffee.

We start together with the porters. The kitchen staff has to clean everything, follows later, passes us some time later and around noon we meet them again in a nice place where they are preparing our lunch. We are getting some small bites on the spot the lunch 30 min later. After lunch same procedure as in the morning. Again they pass us and  dinner is almost ready when we meet the place for the night- usually in a great landscape with excellent mountain view. Our cook Ram is an artist. We do not get two times the same. He is always preparing a menu of 4 or 5 plates with fresh products they buy from the farmers during the day. Other tourists we meet every two or three days.

Any so called tea houses not more often. At eight all are tired. At nine everyone sleeps.
Slowly we come higher. This beautiful Lho Monastry is under the Manaslu glacier in almost 4000m of altitude. The landscape is breathtaking not only through the lack of oxygen.
